The grand sweep of Telltales contributions on the theme of The Gift in June was very special: from a youth memoir seen through the prism of rock music, to Orlando-esque historical panoply, to a travel essay – cum – dream of Cornish history. The stories from that night still lingered when a set of Vision – inspired pieces proved highly popular during the Telltales presentation at July’s Penzance Literary Festival. A sweltering night attracted a standing room – only audience to the Admiral Benbow where an eclectic mix of contributions included a tale of invisible worlds; poetry of loss and affirmation; memoirs of childhood idyll; as well as social and magical realism mixed in modern-day adult trauma. The breadth and the quality of the writing impressed many in the audience who were new to Telltales events, and a return invitation to the festival underlines the success and good vibes the night enjoyed. Thanks to all the writers who took part in both the June and July performances.
Submissions are open for the next Telltales reading on Monday 16 September at Dolly’s Tea Rooms/Wine bar, above Falmouth Booksellers. The deadline is extended to 5 September, and submissions should be made via the website: The loose theme, in line with the September Splash festival, is SPLASH! Make of it what you will: spladoosh, or maybe, plash;a dive of symmetrical beauty which radiates a beguiling pattern, or a bad belly-flop. The choice is yours, and is by no means restricted to these few suggestions. The splash could be as enigmatic as one hand clapping. Poems, stories, blogs, extracts from longer projects are welcome, provided the total is a maximum of ten minutes/2000 words.
My Cornwall magazine will be running a writing competition, whose winner will be published in the magazine as well as performing at Telltales. See the Telltales website for details.
Look forward to seeing you in September.
