29 July

July 30th, 2014  |  Published in Frontpage

Telltales came back to Dolly’s on 29 July. The suggested theme for the evening was ‘Tide and Time’, and fortunately, because a burst pipe meant Falmouth’s taps had run dry, what our audience had a thirst for was spellbinding words, not water.

David Rowland, Sarah Valmai and Trina Beckett, were there, who had all featured at the Penzance Litfest. David sang songs on the theme of looking back and the passage of time; Sarah read  lyrical love poems full of humour and gentle eroticism, and Trina told a story about time travel in which a book proved to be a deadly weapon.
Dominic Power and Douglas Bence were welcomed back after long absences. Douglas’s tall story turned into a murder mystery. Dominic read haunting poems about the turning tide and the sea ‘hissing under the hull of the world’. Contributions came also from 3 writers making their first appearances at Telltales: Martine Levy with a poignant story about a mismatched couple; Aditya Mandrekar who took us to a beach in Mumbai where a man came to terms with his identity and Joy Salisbury reading an extract from her novel set in the 1930’s, in which an 8 year old girl described the departure from home of her teenage brother destined to die fighting fascism in Spain.

The next Telltales will be at Dolly’s on 30 September when the theme for writers  is ‘Drift’. We look forward to seeing you there.
